a standard bathroom in Houston home

Planning to renovate your bathroom but not sure what budget to set aside?

Well, you can expect a cost range between $8,000 and $30,000 for a standard bathroom upgrade in Houston.

Here, the exact cost will depend on the size of your bathroom, materials and fixtures you choose, and to what extent you are upgrading the bathroom.

For instance, let’s say you have a small bathroom and you are doing very small changes. In this case, you can complete the upgrade in about $8,000 or a little more.

However, if you want to fully remodel a master bathroom with new tile and plumbing, custom shower, and high-end fixtures, the cost can easily climb to $30,000.

Also, if you choose to change the bathroom layout, be prepared to pay even more than $30,000.

I have explained the latest bathroom remodeling costs for different project sizes and scope in this blog. These costs are based on the bathroom upgrade projects we do at MPS as well as the latest market rates.

So, let’s have a look up close.

Key takeaways

  • A standard Houston-area bathroom remodel project can cost between $8,000-$30,000.
  • A small bathroom with less changes will cost on the lower end. A large bathroom with more changes will cost on the higher end.
  • Labor, plumbing, tile, waterproofing, fixtures and cabinetry are major contributors to the final cost.
  • Don’t change the bathroom layout if you want to keep the costs lower.
  • You can use cost per square foot as a rough benchmark but it is not the most reliable way to estimate cost.

What are the standard bathroom remodeling costs in the Houston Metro area?

The total bathroom remodel cost for a standard Houston home starts at  $8,000 for a small renovation project and goes up-to $30,000 for bigger and more extensive projects.

For a usual mid-tier bathroom renovation project, the kind of which we mostly work with at MPS, you can expect the cost to be between $12,000 and $25,000. This is a kind of project where you are replacing the visible components while not changing the bathroom layout.

Talking about big-ticket bathroom renovations, the ones where you change plumbing location, add a bigger shower, or use custom cabinets, the total cost can exceed $30,000.

What do you get at different bathroom remodeling costs?

Now that you have an idea about the average bathroom remodeling costs in Houston, let’s see what you actually get at different price ranges.

#1. For $8,000-$12,000 you get a limited upgrade

This is the entry-level budget for a basic or small bathroom renovation. Here, update the vanity, toilet, faucet, lighting, paint and flooring. However, you will have to keep the existing plumbing locations and some of the other components intact.

#2. For $12,000-$25,000 you get a mid-range upgrade

At this budget, you can expect to make meaningful changes done in your bathroom. This includes new vanity, countertops, flooring, shower or tub upgrades, tile, fixtures, lighting and finishing work.

You can also make some limited plumbing or electrical changes, but you might not be able to completely change the bathroom layout.

#3. For $25,000-$40,000 you get a big-ticket upgrade

This is the price point where we are talking about upgrades like larger shower areas, better tile, upgraded vanities, improved lighting, higher-quality fixtures. Also, you can undertake more extensive plumbing and electrical work.

Not to mention, you can also change the bathroom layout at this budget. For instance, you can replace a bathtub with a walk-in shower, install a double vanity, or move plumbing to make better use of the space.

#4. For $40,00 or more you get a high-end custom bathroom

This is the peak of bathroom remodeling where you can do a complete gut remodel. Here, you can add custom cabinets, premium countertops, specialty tiles like porcelain, custom shower, frameless glass, freestanding tub, premium fixtures and lighting, and a lot more.

What are the factors that affect your final bathroom remodel cost in Houston?

There are a lot of factors that can increase or decrease the cost of remodeling a bathroom. While some of these are obvious, others are only found after remodeling work starts.

Here are some of the biggest factors that the average cost bathroom remodel:

#1. The size of your bathroom

A bigger bathroom requires more flooring, tile, paint and other materials, which increases the cost of remodeling.

Note: Bathrooms also have some fixed costs such as demolition, plumbing, electrical work, waterproofing and installation. So even a small bathroom can have a high remodeling cost if these fixed costs are involved.

#2. Layout change

Changing the layout is one of the biggest factors that increases remodeling budget. That’s because if you move the toilet, shower, sink or other plumbing fixtures, you will also need to change the plumbing connections.

Not to mention, you might also need more electrical work, wall repairs, flooring work and other modifications. Apart from cost, layout changes also increase the average bathroom remodel timeline.

#3. Plumbing work

Plumbing work can increase the overall cost of a bathroom remodel when you move fixtures or replace old plumbing lines and connections.

This is especially true for Houston neighborhoods like the Old Sixth Ward Historic District and the Houston Heights where there are some of the oldest surviving homes. Here, most of the homes we have worked in almost always needed plumbing repairs or upgrades after walls and floors were opened.

#4. Shower and bathtub

The shower can also be one of the expensive parts of remodel. And no, I am not talking about a basic tub replacement, that’s still on the lower end. But if you want a large walk-in shower with new plumbing, tile, waterproofing, glass, niches and a custom shower system, that’s going to inflate the bill.

#5. Tile and waterproofing

Tile costs differ based on the material, size, pattern and installation requirements.

But the material itself is not the only expense. There is also demolition, surface preparation, waterproofing, installation, grout and finishing work involved. These are the things that increase the cost even if you use basic materials.

#6. Vanity and cabinetry

Vanity is another aspect that moves the cost up or down. For instance, a stock vanity is much less expensive than custom cabinetry.

Overall, your cost can increase or decrease based on vanity size, material, number of sinks, countertop, hardware, store, and custom cabinetry dimensions.

Also, if you are remodeling a primary bathroom and want a large double vanity, that can also increase the cost.

#7. Electrical and lighting

Electrical work is another cost that affects pricing. Here, adding new lighting, outlets, exhaust fans, heated features or other electrical components can all require extra wiring and installation, and thus increase the cost.

#8. Demolition and hidden damage

There is a lot of demolition and disposal work involved in bathroom remodels. And this is also where hidden problems like water damage, subfloor damage, moisture intrusion, shoddy work from the past, etc., are found.

Now, depending on the extent of damage and what needs to be fixed, this can increase your overall bathroom remodel cost.

#9. Materials and fixtures

Materials and fixtures are also major drivers of bathroom remodeling costs in Houston. Although the basic materials are not very expensive, higher end materials and brands can add several thousand dollars to your final bill.

#10. Labor and permits

Bathroom remodeling requires several different trades, including demolition, plumbing, electrical, tile installation, carpentry, painting and sometimes glass installation. Now, the more trades involved and the more complicated your project will be and the higher the labor cost will become.

Also, you will need to secure permits. For instance, if your bathroom remodeling involves layout change, you will need a Houston building permit. Similarly, you will need to secure other relevant permits from the city department for plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work, among others.

FAQs about bathroom remodeling costs in Houston

Is bathroom remodel cost per square foot realistic?

You might have come across bathroom remodeling estimates of $100, $150 or even $300 per square foot online. And there is nothing wrong with these estimates.

But I suggest you use these only for rough estimation. That’s because the final cost can increase based on several factors like hidden problems, necessary plumbing work, etc.

How much does a guest bathroom remodel cost?

A guest bathroom remodel can cost between $8,000 and $20,000, although the final cost depends on what you are replacing.

A limited update involving a new vanity, toilet, flooring, fixtures and paint will cost on the lower end. But a more complete guest bathroom remodel involving a new tub or shower, wall tile, flooring, vanity, lighting and other fixtures can cost more.

How much does a master bathroom remodel cost?

A master bathroom remodel can easily cost between $20,000 and $40,000, especially if it involves a major upgrade.

Also, if you want features like a larger walk-in shower, double vanity, custom cabinetry, premium tile, a freestanding, etc., expect to pay more than $40,000.

How to tell if a Houston bathroom remodeling quote is realistic?

Once you start getting quotes, you might find that they are nowhere near each other. So, before deciding which contractor to go with, compare what each contractor has actually included.

Here’s what I suggest you check the quote for and questions to ask the contractor before deciding to work with them:

Check the quote forAsk this question
DemolitionIs removal and debris disposal included?
PlumbingAre fixture relocations included?
WaterproofingWhat waterproofing work is included?
TileDoes the price include installation and preparation?
VanityWhat vanity, countertop and hardware are included?
ElectricalAre new outlets, lighting and wiring included?
FixturesAre specific fixtures included or just an allowance?
PermitsWho handles required permits and inspections?
Hidden damageHow will unexpected repairs be handled?

How much should you keep aside for unexpected bathroom remodeling costs?

I suggest keeping around 10-20 percent of your planned remodeling budget available for unexpected expenses. More so if you are working on an older home or doing a major renovation.

For instance, on a $20,000 remodel budget, you should set aside $2,000-$4,000 for un-expected scenarios.
